On the morning of each of the 5 study sessions, your child will arrive at the lab after a 12-hour overnight fast. Your child will be given a breakfast that contains a baked potato, mashed potatoes, French fries, or white bread. Your child will be asked to consume each of these breakfast options, or skip breakfast. Your child will be asked to complete subjective ratings on appetite and well-being at seven time-points throughout each session, followed by a lunch 2 hours after breakfast. Lastly, you will complete a food record describing what your child ate for the rest of the day of the study session.

Eligibility Criteria

All genders

9 to 14 years old


Non-breakfast skipper

Not taking medication

No allergies/intolerances to potatoes/gluten/soy/mustard/dairy

Study Tasks

Eat breakfast
Answer questions about subjective appetite
Eat lunch


This research study has been reviewed and approved by the Ryerson Research Ethics Board (REB2017-330).
