Relationship Between Muscle Function and Balance Control Following Intensive Care Unit Stay

Individuals who survive a critical illness can experience Intensive Care Unit acquired weakness (ICUAW) – a physical functional disability that begins in the ICU and can last for years after discharge, due to muscle and nerve damage. Weakness that persists long term worsens an individual’s quality of life, and may prevent them from being able to return to work or live independently. At the end of this study, researchers may be in a better position to propose therapies that will allow patients with weakness to gain back their muscle and strength, to ensure full functional independence and return to normal levels of activity, after resolution of their critical illness.

Eligibility Criteria

Male, Female

At least 18 years old

18 years of age or over

No neurological, muscle, bone or joint conditions

No lung diseases

No heart diseases

Study Tasks

Complete basic demographic information
Strength testing of knee and ankle joints
Standing balance tests
Recall of any falls over the past 3 months

Ethics

This study has been approved the Unity Health and University of Toronto's research ethics boards (REB# 18-128).
