Language & Literacy Development in Canadian Children

Study Goals: Our study aims to better understand literacy development in Canadian children. This study focuses on vocabulary and phonological processing (i.e. sound-based awareness), two very important language skills which help facilitate reading development. Study Description and Participation: Please complete the screening questionnaire if your child is between 4 years of age up to Grade 2 (7-8 years of age), and either: A. Only speaks and understands English B. Speaks and understands English and another language C. Speaks and/or understands both English and Urdu D. Speaks and/or understands both English and Hindi The researcher will conduct the word games online (through Zoom or Skype) with your child. The online session will take approximately 1 hour (*except for English-Urdu bilingual children or English-Hindi bilingual children who can participate in 2 online sessions; each session will take approximately 1 hour and can be done on different days). After completing the screening questionnaire, we will contact you if your child is eligible to participate in this language and literacy study. Thank you for your time and interest.

Eligibility Criteria

Male, Female

4 to 8 years old

Between 4 years - Grade 2 (i.e. 7-8 years)

One of the following applies to your child: 1. Speaks English and speaks and/or understands Urdu; 2. Speaks English and speaks and/or understands Hindi; 3. Speaks and understands English and another language; 4. Speaks and understands English only

Study Tasks

2 language and demographic background questionnaires (for parent completion: 10-15 minutes)
3 English word games involving picture-naming, sound-based games and reading (1 hour)
If your child knows another language in addition to English (i.e., Urdu or Hindi), then: - * A session involving 3 Urdu/Hindi word games (picture-naming, sound-based games and reading) is an option (1 hour)


This study has been approved by the University of Toronto's Research Ethics Board (REB 38608)
