COMPASS : COVID-19 Managing Parent Attitudes and School Stress

Western University, Developing Brain Lab

You are being invited to participate in a research study because you are a parent living in Canada with a child ages 6-12 attending, either in person or online, a publicly funded school during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to assess family experiences with learning during the pandemic. Specifically, we are exploring how stress during the pandemic and online learning is associated with learning outcomes. We will also assess how your child’s physical activity, sleep patterns, extracurriculars, thinking and reasoning ability, and time spent socializing impact these associations. This study involves participation every 6 weeks for a total of five time points during the 2020-2021 school year.

Your Impact

During the COVID-19 pandemic, families and children all over the world are impacted by stress associated with the quarantine/isolation as well as different learning formats, which may impact your day to day life and how your children are able to learn. There is a need to identify the long-term factors that promote increased or decreased risk to stressors during the pandemic, and how children’s learning outcomes are affected. If we can determine which factors are most protective, then we can share this public health information to school boards and other families who may experience stress due to disrupted learning during future virus-related pandemics or epidemics.
