The Breakfast Study for Type 2 Diabetes

University of British Columbia, Early Development Research Group

The main objective of this study is to determine if consuming a low-carbohydrate breakfast will improve blood glucose control, increase satiety (feeling of fullness) and improve body composition (weight and body mass index) in people with T2D when compared to a traditional low fat breakfast. The primary outcome measure (most important outcome) is change in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) over a 12 week period of following the low carbohydrate/high fat (LCHF) or low-fat breakfast control (CTL). The HbA1c tells you your average level of blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. Secondary measures (second most important outcomes) will include fasting blood glucose, insulin, blood fat profile and inflammation. As well as hunger/satiety levels, caloric intake and body weight/ body mass index (body composition) outcomes.

Your Impact

The findings will be easy-to-implement and could help solidify a low carbohydrate meal as the ideal breakfast option for people with T2D.
