We at the University of Calgary and Tom Baker Cancer Centre, are conducting a study on sexual expression in patients with hematological cancer. Sexuality is an important component of quality of life, yet sexuality research in this specific population is limited to younger patients and those who have received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Given the abundance of research supporting that sexual concerns are highly prevalent in cancer survivors, it follows that this could also be true for patients with hematological cancers specifically. Eligibility criteria include: a hematological cancer diagnosis, good comprehensive of English writing, and the participant can be at any point in their treatment trajectory, and do not have to be sexually active to participate. The survey focuses on aspects of sexuality such as sexual functioning, sexual distress, sexual satisfaction, sexual communication, and body image. Participants who complete the survey will be entered into a draw for a $20 Visa gift card (chances of winning are 1 in 20).
There is limited research in this area, this research is intended to gain an understanding of how individuals with blood cancer sexually express themselves since diagnosis or treatment. These findings will be disseminated to oncologists so they can provide better holistic care, and to possible develop sexual health programs for patients.
